Career Talk: How to Find Jobs in Industry and Academia

Tim Yeh (Hsin-Chih Yeh) (Website; Google Scholar) from Austin Assistant Professor, The University of Texas at Austin

For the past 20 years in the US, Dr. Yeh had worked in private sectors, government institutes, and top-ranked universities. With his extensive experience, he will share his story in both industry and academia, analyze their pros and cons, and reveal how he made the choices when switching between different fields. Most importantly, in this talk he will use his own case as an example to teach you how to increase your chance to find a job in industry and academia. He has successfully helped many of his friends find a job in industry or academia in the past 4 years.

Dr. Yeh obtained his BS degree from National Taiwan University, MS degree from the University of California, Los Angeles, and PhD degree from Johns Hopkins University, all in mechanical engineering. After graduation from UCLA, he worked at Optical Micro Machines Inc. in San Diego from 1998 to 2003 as an R&D engineer, developing MEMS-based photonic switches for telecommunications. The calling for scientific research and his passion for education drove him back to school after 5 years’ adventure in the startup company. He switched his research fields to single-molecule detection, biosensor development, and microfluidics when he attended the graduate school at Johns Hopkins. After receiving his PhD degree, Dr. Yeh went to work at Los Alamos National Laboratory as a postdoctoral research from 2009 to 2012, in the Center for Integrated Nanotechnologies. Dr. Yeh joined the Biomedical Engineering Department at the University of Texas at Austin in 2012 as an assistant professor. His research interests include nanobiosensor development, 3D molecular tracking and super-resolution microscopy.
